Gujranwala: The recent downpours have left low-lying areas of the city in knee-deep water.
Citizens complain that the rainy weather has exposed claims of the district administration and water and sanitation agency (WASA) officials that preparations are in place for dealing with any emergent situation. They said houses and buildings in several areas had developed cracks and could collapse any time due to seepage.
On Wednesday, pedestrians and motorists were seen facing a great deal of difficulty, as most major roads remained flooded. The areas most-affected by rain water were those along Gondlanwala Road, College Road, Hospital Road, Jinnah Road and in Model Town, Civil Lines, Peoples Colony, and Zahid Colony. Traffic jams were also witnessed at major thoroughfares. The rain also affected the electricity system causing frequent power breakdowns.
Meanwhile, water level in rivers is increasing due to current rainy season. An alert has been issued to residents of adjoining areas of River Chenab and nullahs in Gujranwala.
